Frequently asked questions

How much does Argentina citizenship by investment cost?

The minimum is a US$350,000 non-refundable contribution to the National Treasury, or a US$800,000 subscription to a programme bond. Family members cost extra, and government fees have not yet been published as of 2 October 2026.

What are the two investment routes?

Route I is a direct, non-refundable contribution of US$350,000 to the National Treasury. Route II is a subscription to a US$800,000 public bond created specifically for the programme.

Is the US$350,000 contribution refundable?

No. The official announcement describes it as a direct, non-refundable contribution to the National Treasury.

Does the US$800,000 bond pay interest?

Infobae reports that the bond pays zero interest. The official release does not state an interest rate, so confirm the terms when the bond documentation is published.

How long must I hold the bond?

AP reports a holding period of seven years. The official maturity date and redemption mechanics have not been published as of 2 October 2026.

Will I get my bond money back?

The bond is designed to be repaid, but the redemption terms are not yet published. Repayment depends on those terms and on Argentina's ability to pay, so treat the bond as a sovereign credit risk.

Can I include my family?

Yes. A spouse costs US$100,000, each single child aged 18 to 25 with no children of their own costs US$100,000, and each child under 18 costs US$25,000.

How much does it cost for a family of four?

The official example is US$500,000 for a principal applicant, a spouse and two minor children. How family amounts combine with the bond route has not been officially confirmed.

Can I include my parents or other relatives?

The official announcement lists only spouses and children. It does not mention parents, siblings or other dependants.

Who is eligible to apply?

The programme is for foreign nationals who make the qualifying investment and pass due diligence. Detailed eligibility rules, such as a minimum age or excluded nationalities, have not been published as of 2 October 2026.

What due diligence checks are carried out?

The government lists identity verification, traceability and legality of funds, financial and asset analysis, jurisdictional risk, criminal and reputational background, and migration history. It says the checks follow OECD and FATF standards, and all funds must move through the formal financial system.

Who decides my application?

The Agencia de Programas de Ciudadanía por Inversión evaluates it, with input from SIDE, the UIF and the Ministries of Security and the Interior. The Dirección Nacional de Migraciones gives final approval.

When do applications open?

The government says applications open in the fourth quarter of 2026. An exact date and the application portal had not been announced as of 2 October 2026.

How long does processing take?

The government has not published a processing time. Decreto 524/2025 says Migraciones must decide within 30 days of receiving the Agency's report, but the length of the Agency's own review is not fixed.

What government fees are there?

Government processing and due-diligence fees have not been published as of 2 October 2026. Budget separately for legal, translation and document costs.

Do I need to live in Argentina before I apply?

No. DNU 366/2025 allows naturalisation for a relevant investment regardless of time of residence, unlike ordinary naturalisation, which needs two continuous years of legal residence.

Do I need to live in or visit Argentina after I get citizenship?

Any residence or physical-presence requirement after the grant has not been published as of 2 October 2026. Whether you must attend in person, for example for biometrics, is also not yet known.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

The official announcement does not mention a language requirement. Check the detailed rules when they are published.

Does citizenship make me an Argentine tax resident?

Not by itself. According to PwC, people naturalised through the investment route are not treated as tax residents solely because of that naturalisation, and the ordinary residence rules apply. Take tax advice if you plan to spend time in Argentina.

Can I keep my current citizenship?

Argentina allows dual and multiple citizenship, and naturalised citizens do not have to renounce their original nationality. Your home country may have its own rules; India and China, for example, restrict dual citizenship.

How strong is the Argentine passport?

It gives visa-free or simplified entry to about 170 destinations, including the Schengen Area for 90 days in any 180, Japan and the United Arab Emirates.

Do Argentine citizens need a visa for the United States?

Yes. Argentina is not in the US Visa Waiver Program, so a B1/B2 visa is required. In September 2026 the US ambassador said work on Argentina's return to the programme continues.

Do Argentine citizens need a visa for Canada?

Yes, a visa is generally required. An electronic travel authorisation (eTA) is possible only for those who held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa.

Does Argentine citizenship give rights in Mercosur?

The Mercosur Residence Agreement lets nationals of participating states apply for temporary residence of up to two years in other participating states, which can become permanent. It is applied by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru; check how the host country treats naturalised citizens.

Does it help me get Spanish or EU citizenship?

Not directly. Spain's two-year residence route to nationality applies to Ibero-American nationals by origin, so naturalised Argentines do not qualify for it.

Is the programme legal?

It rests on DNU 366/2025 and Decreto 524/2025. On 30 June 2026 the Cámara Nacional Electoral declared DNU 366/2025 unconstitutional, and the government is appealing to the Supreme Court while saying the decree stays in force.

What happens if the Supreme Court rules against the government?

It is not known. Depending on the scope of the ruling, naturalisation could return to federal judges, or the investment route could need a new legal basis from Congress. Our legal-status guide sets out the scenarios.

Can I invest in real estate to qualify?

No. Real estate is not a qualifying route in the official announcement, which lists only the Treasury contribution and the programme bond.

Will I get a refund if my application is rejected?

Refund terms for rejected applications have not been published as of 2 October 2026. Ask about escrow and refund conditions before you transfer any funds.

Can naturalised Argentine citizens vote?

Yes. Under the Código Electoral Nacional, naturalised Argentines are electors from age 18, and registered electors have a legal duty to vote, with some exemptions. Citizens who live abroad can register to vote from overseas.

Can a naturalised citizen hold public office?

Partly. The Constitution requires four years of citizenship to become a national deputy and six years to become a senator. The President and Vice-President must be native-born or the child of a native citizen.

Will my children born after naturalisation be Argentine?

A child born in Argentina is Argentine regardless of the parents' nationality. Ley 346 gives citizenship by option to children born abroad to native Argentines; whether this extends to children of naturalised citizens is not clear, so take legal advice.

Can citizenship obtained by investment be revoked?

Reports say DNU 366/2025 adds grounds to annul or lose naturalised citizenship, such as concealing facts or a conviction for trafficking or money laundering, but we have not confirmed the exact wording. The pending court case adds a further uncertainty.

Do I need an agent to apply?

The government has not published a list of authorised agents or an application portal as of 2 October 2026. Be cautious of anyone who claims official accreditation before the rules are published, and keep your own lawyer independent.

Is this the same as a golden visa?

No. A golden visa gives residence, and citizenship comes later, if at all. Argentina's programme leads to citizenship and a passport without a prior period of residence, which is why the press calls it a golden passport.

How do I start?

Gather your identity, civil-status and source-of-funds documents now, and take independent legal and tax advice. When the rules are published, compare the two routes against your plans; you can request a private briefing for an independent view.
