Britons and the Argentine passport: a residence play, not a travel upgrade

British citizens can hold Argentine nationality with no permission and no notice to London. The case rests on South America and a fallback, not on visa-free travel.

Key facts

  • Cost: US$350,000 non-refundable contribution, or a US$800,000 government bond. A couple with two children under 18 starts at US$500,000.
  • The UK allows dual citizenship. No application and no notification are needed.
  • Travel gain for a British passport holder is small. The UK passport reaches more destinations than the Argentine one.
  • UK tax depends on residence, not nationality. A UK–Argentina tax treaty has been in force since 1997.
  • Two Argentine appeal courts have ruled against the decree behind the programme. See legal status.

For a British citizen, an Argentine passport is unusual in one respect: on paper it is a weaker document than the one you already hold. So the reasons to apply are different from those of most applicants. They concern where you want to live, do business or keep a second base, rather than where you want to travel.

This guide covers the points specific to UK nationals. For the programme rules, see our overview of Argentina citizenship by investment and the cost guide.

Note. Two Argentine appeal courts have ruled against DNU 366/2025, the decree that allows naturalisation through investment. On 18 June 2026 Chamber III of the federal civil and commercial appeals court struck down the parts that give citizenship decisions to Migraciones. On 30 June 2026 the Cámara Nacional Electoral declared the decree unconstitutional. The government has appealed to the Supreme Court and says the decree stays in effect until the ruling is final. Read our legal status page before you commit funds.

Can a British citizen hold Argentine nationality?

Yes. The UK government says plainly that dual citizenship is allowed and that you do not need to apply for it. You can take a foreign citizenship and keep your British citizenship. There is no form to file and no one to notify.

Argentina also allows dual and multiple nationality. A naturalised Argentine does not have to renounce the nationality they already hold. Our dual citizenship guide explains the Argentine rules.

Two practical points matter more than the legal ones:

  • Consular help. UK guidance says dual nationals cannot normally receive British diplomatic assistance in their other country of citizenship. In Argentina, you would be an Argentine first.
  • Re-entry to the UK. You must travel to the UK on a valid British or Irish passport, or with a certificate of entitlement.

Some Britons ask whether the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands creates any obstacle. Nothing in either country’s nationality rules prevents a British citizen from becoming Argentine. It is, however, a political sensitivity worth understanding if you plan to live or do business in Argentina.

Mobility: an honest comparison

The July 2026 edition of the Henley Passport Index places the British passport 6th, with 184 visa-free or visa-on-arrival destinations. The Argentine passport ranks 16th, with 169. For a British citizen, the Argentine passport opens almost no new doors.

Destination British passport Argentine passport
Schengen Area 90 days in 180 90 days in 180
United States ESTA under the Visa Waiver Program B1/B2 visa required
Canada eTA Visa required (eTA only in limited cases)
Mainland China 30 days visa-free until 31 Dec 2026 30 days visa-free until 31 Dec 2026
Brazil 90 days visa-free No visa; entry with Argentine ID card
United Kingdom Home country ETA required (£20)

Note the last row. Since 8 January 2025, Argentine nationals have needed an ETA to visit the UK. That matters if your spouse or children would travel on Argentine passports alone.

The real gains are regional:

  • South American travel on an ID card. The Argentine national identity card (DNI) is accepted as a travel document in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.
  • Mercosur residence, later. The Mercosur Residence Agreement gives two-year temporary residence in member states. However, Article 2 covers naturalised nationals only after five years of Argentine nationality.

What it does not do is restore anything lost with Brexit. The Schengen allowance is identical. Spain’s two-year residence route for Ibero-American nationals applies only to Argentines by origin. See the passport guide for more.

UK tax: residence still decides

UK tax follows residence under the Statutory Residence Test, not nationality. Becoming Argentine changes nothing for a UK resident.

The rules for internationally mobile families did change recently:

  • Remittance basis abolished. From 6 April 2025, the remittance basis for non-domiciled residents ended.
  • New four-year regime. New arrivals who have been non-UK resident for the previous ten tax years qualify for the foreign income and gains (FIG) regime for their first four years of UK residence.
  • Worldwide taxation afterwards. After that, UK residents pay tax on worldwide income and gains, regardless of domicile.

If you later move to Argentina, the UK–Argentina Double Taxation Convention matters. It entered into force on 1 August 1997 and has since been modified by the OECD Multilateral Instrument. On the Argentine side, naturalisation through investment does not by itself make you an Argentine tax resident. A foreigner who moves to Argentina for reasons other than work generally becomes resident from the 13th month.

Inheritance tax and departure planning are complex for Britons with assets in several countries. Speak to a qualified UK tax adviser before you restructure anything.

Due diligence and documents

Argentina’s checks cover identity, the traceability and legality of funds, financial and asset analysis, jurisdictional risk, criminal and reputational background, and migration history. They follow OECD and FATF standards, and all funds must move through the formal financial system.

The UK is not on the FATF list of jurisdictions under increased monitoring. Expect the usual focus on source of wealth: business sale agreements, property completion statements, pension or trust distributions, and HMRC returns.

Apostilles. The UK has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since 1965 and Argentina since 1988. The FCDO Legalisation Office issues UK apostilles. The standard paper service costs £45 per document, and an e-Apostille costs £35.

Police certificate. Plan for a UK criminal record certificate, plus one from every other country where you have lived for a significant time.

Translation. Budget for certified Spanish translations. The Agency had not published its document rules as of 2 October 2026, so confirm the format with Argentine counsel first.

Banking. Sterling must be converted and wired as US dollars. Agree the route and the documents with your bank before the payment date. A US$350,000 transfer to a foreign government will trigger compliance questions.

Is it right for you?

It may suit you if:

  • You have family, property or business in Argentina or the wider region.
  • You want a long-term base in South America, with residence options that grow after five years.
  • You value a second nationality as a fallback and accept a weaker passport as the price.

It is probably not right for you if:

  • You want better travel access. Your British passport already gives it.
  • You hope to regain EU rights. Argentina does not provide them.
  • You need legal certainty now. The Supreme Court has not yet ruled.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need permission from the UK to become Argentine?

No. The UK allows dual citizenship and you do not need to apply for it or tell the Home Office. You can take foreign citizenship and keep your British citizenship.

Will the British Embassy help me in Argentina once I am a dual national?

Usually not. UK government guidance says dual nationals cannot normally receive British diplomatic assistance in their other country of citizenship.

Does an Argentine passport give me back EU travel or residence rights?

No. Argentines get 90 days in any 180 in the Schengen Area, the same as British citizens. Spain's two-year naturalisation route applies only to Argentines by origin, not to naturalised citizens.

Will Argentine citizenship change my UK tax position?

No. UK tax depends on residence under the Statutory Residence Test, not on nationality. The UK–Argentina double taxation convention applies to residents of either country.
