Argentina citizenship for Turkish citizens

For a Turkish passport holder, the attraction is Europe without a visa queue. Türkiye's own law makes dual nationality straightforward, but the notification duty and military-service rules need attention.

Key facts

  • Türkiye allows dual nationality. Law 5901 (Art. 44) requires you to notify the authorities after you acquire the second nationality. No prior permission is needed.
  • Main gain: Schengen, UK and Canada access. Turkish passport 112 destinations; Argentine 169 (Henley, July 2026).
  • Türkiye left the FATF grey list in June 2024 and is not on it after June 2026.
  • Both countries are Apostille Convention parties.
  • Cost: US$350,000 non-refundable, or a US$800,000 bond. Applications open in Q4 2026.

Ask a Turkish business owner about travel and the conversation turns quickly to Schengen appointments. Waiting times, refusals and short-validity visas are a real cost for people who sell into Europe. That is the practical case for Argentina citizenship by investment for Turkish citizens.

What Turkish law says about a second nationality

A common belief is that a Turk needs government permission to take another nationality. That was the position under the old Law No. 403. It changed with Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901, published on 12 June 2009, which repealed Law 403.

Under Article 44 of Law 5901, a Turkish citizen who acquires a foreign nationality keeps Turkish citizenship. The duty is to notify the authorities after the acquisition, not to ask in advance. The person submits documents, and after an identity check the authority adds a multiple-citizenship note to the family registry. Permission (Article 25) is needed only to give up Turkish citizenship.

The General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs (NVI) describes the notification procedure:

  • form VAT-12, two biometric photos and your Turkish ID;
  • a notarised Turkish translation of a document showing the date you acquired the foreign nationality (for Argentina, typically the naturalisation document or the Argentine ID);
  • an in-person application, or one through a special power of attorney, at a district population directorate in Türkiye or at a Turkish mission abroad. Postal applications are not accepted.

Notify promptly once your Argentine naturalisation is granted, and make sure your names and dates match exactly. The NVI says procedures stop where foreign identity data differs from the registry. Argentina, for its part, does not ask you to renounce Turkish citizenship. Our dual citizenship guide explains the Argentine side.

Military service: the passport does not change it

Military Service Law No. 7179 (2019) applies to Turkish men from the year they turn 20 to the year they turn 41. Article 39 offers payment in foreign currency (dövizle askerlik) for men who have lived abroad for at least three years, with remote training. Dual citizens resident abroad qualify after three years abroad without a work condition.

The key point: the route depends on residence abroad, not on holding a second passport. A Turkish man who becomes Argentine but lives in Istanbul keeps the ordinary obligation. If you plan to move abroad, check the current fee and conditions with the consulate, as the amount is updated regularly.

The mobility gain

Destination Turkish passport Argentine passport
Schengen Area Visa required Visa-free, 90/180 days
United Kingdom Visa required ETA
Canada Visa required Visa, or eTA if you hold a US visa or a recent Canadian visa
Japan Visa-free, 90 days Visa-free, 90 days
Argentina Visa-free, 90 days Citizen
United States Visa required Visa required
Henley Passport Index, July 2026 112 destinations (#49) 169 destinations (#16)

The Schengen line is the one that matters for most Turkish clients. Argentina’s 30-day visa-free entry to China (valid until 31 December 2026) is a smaller bonus. The United States remains closed without a visa: Argentina left the Visa Waiver Program in 2002 and has no date to rejoin. See our Argentine passport guide.

Moving funds and tax

The US State Department’s 2025 investment climate report states that Türkiye sets no limit on foreign currency that individuals send abroad through financial institutions. Argentina, in turn, requires all funds to pass through the formal financial system with a documented, lawful source. Keep bank records of how the money was earned and converted.

Türkiye taxes residents (those who stay more than six months in a calendar year) on worldwide income, with a top rate of 40% in 2026. A new nationality does not change that.

On the Argentine side, people naturalised through investment are not treated as Argentine tax residents solely because of the naturalisation. Ordinary tests, such as permanent residence, apply. Speak to a qualified adviser in both countries if you plan to move.

Compliance and documents

  • FATF: Türkiye was placed under increased monitoring in October 2021 and removed in June 2024. It is not on the list after the June 2026 plenary.
  • Apostille: Türkiye has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since 1985, and Argentina since 1988. Turkish civil-registry and criminal-record documents can be apostilled rather than legalised.
  • Due diligence: Argentina’s Agency checks identity, the traceability and legality of funds, assets, jurisdictional risk, criminal and reputational background, and migration history. SIDE, the UIF and the Ministries of Security and the Interior take part, and Migraciones gives final approval.

The investment route rests on DNU 366/2025. On 18 June 2026, Chamber III of the federal civil and commercial appeals court (the Volosh case) struck down the parts of the decree that give citizenship decisions to Migraciones. On 30 June 2026 the Cámara Nacional Electoral declared the whole decree unconstitutional. The government has appealed to the Supreme Court and says the decree stays in force until the ruling is final. Read our legal status page before you commit.

Cost for a Turkish family

Family Donation route
Single applicant US$350,000
Couple US$450,000
Couple + 2 children under 18 (official example) US$500,000
Couple + 2 children aged 18–25 (single, no children) US$650,000

The bond route is US$800,000 for the main applicant; press reports say it is held for seven years and pays no interest. Government fees are not yet published. See our cost guide.

Is it right for you?

Good fit: you travel to Europe or the UK often for business, your funds are well documented, and you are comfortable with an investment whose legal basis is still before the courts.

Think twice: if your sons are of military age and live in Türkiye, the passport will not change their obligations. If the United States is your main destination, an Argentine passport does not help yet.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Türkiye's permission to become Argentine?

No. Under Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901 of 2009, a Turkish citizen who acquires another nationality keeps Turkish citizenship and must notify the authorities after the acquisition, through the civil registry or a Turkish consulate. Prior permission is not necessary; permission is needed only if you want to give up Turkish citizenship.

Does Argentine citizenship let me pay for military service in foreign currency?

Not by itself. The foreign-currency route under Military Service Law No. 7179 depends on at least three years of residence abroad, not on a second passport. A Turkish man who lives in Türkiye keeps the ordinary obligation.

What does the Argentine passport add for a Turkish citizen?

Mainly the Schengen Area visa-free for 90 days in 180, the UK with an ETA instead of a visa, and a conditional eTA route to Canada. Turkish citizens already enter Argentina and Japan without a visa, and both passports need a US visa.

Can I send US$350,000 from Türkiye?

Individuals may send foreign currency abroad through banks without a statutory limit, according to the US State Department's 2025 investment climate report. Argentina requires all funds to come through the formal financial system with a documented source.
