Argentina or St Kitts? The pioneer meets the newcomer

St Kitts and Nevis has sold citizenship since 1984. Argentina opened its programme in 2026. One is cheaper for families; the other has the stronger passport and a different kind of risk.

Key facts

  • St Kitts and Nevis: US$250,000 contribution covers a family of up to four.
  • Argentina: US$350,000 for a single applicant; US$500,000 for a couple with two minors.
  • Passport reach: Argentina about 170 destinations; St Kitts 157 (21st, Henley July 2026).
  • Both face risk: EU pressure on Caribbean programmes, and a court challenge in Argentina (legal status).

St Kitts and Nevis created the modern citizenship by investment industry. Its programme is the oldest still running and, after several reforms, one of the most closely regulated in the Caribbean. Argentina citizenship by investment arrives with a large-country passport, a higher price and an open legal question.

Price: St Kitts is cheaper for families

St Kitts’s Sustainable Island State Contribution is US$250,000 whether you apply alone or with up to three dependants. Due diligence adds US$10,000 for the main applicant and US$7,500 for each dependant aged 16 or over. The real-estate routes require at least US$325,000 in an approved condominium share or US$600,000 for a private home.

Argentina prices each person. A single applicant pays US$350,000; a couple with two minors pays US$500,000 on the contribution route. Argentina’s government fees are not yet published, so the real gap is larger than the headline. For the full Argentine tariff, see our cost page.

Passport: Argentina reaches further

On the July 2026 Henley Passport Index, St Kitts and Nevis ranks 21st with 157 destinations. Argentina reaches about 170. Both passports give visa-free Schengen access. Neither gives visa-free entry to the United States or Canada.

The more important question is durability. In late 2025 the EU adopted Regulation 2025/2441, which entered into force on 30 December 2025. It makes investor citizenship schemes a separate ground on which the EU may suspend visa-free travel. The EU already used similar pressure on Vanuatu, which lost visa-free Schengen access permanently in February 2025. IMI Daily reports, citing Antigua’s government, that the European Commission has asked the five Caribbean programmes to end citizenship by investment by June 2028. Compliance: St Kitts is tightening

St Kitts started biometric enrolment on 14 April 2026. Every citizen by investment must enrol by 31 July 2027; passports not re-enrolled cannot be used for travel after that date. In January 2026 the government also announced a residency feature but gave no number of days. The five Eastern Caribbean states have agreed a 30-day residence rule and signed a regional regulator agreement (ECCIRA) in September 2025, but neither was fully operational as of August 2026.

Argentina has not yet said whether it will impose any residence or presence condition after citizenship is granted. Its due diligence involves SIDE, the UIF, the Ministry of Security and the Ministry of the Interior, aligned with OECD and FATF standards.

Note. Two appeal courts ruled against DNU 366/2025 in June 2026: the federal civil and commercial appeals court on 18 June (the Volosh case) and the Cámara Nacional Electoral on 30 June. The government has appealed to the Supreme Court. Until the Court rules, Argentina's legal basis remains contested. See legal status.

Who it suits

St Kitts and Nevis suits families of three or four who want a proven process, a fixed family price and Schengen access. It suits applicants who value a long record of approvals and an established network of agents and lawyers.

Argentina suits applicants who put passport reach first, who may want to live in a large country with a full economy and culture, and who see value in Mercosur residence rights, which naturalised Argentines can use only after five years of nationality. It suits people for whom a known price matters more than a known track record, and who accept the legal risk.

The honest verdict

St Kitts and Nevis is the better-tested product at a lower family price. Argentina has the stronger passport and a country you could actually move to, but no operating history.

The risks run in different directions. St Kitts’s main risk is external: a decision in Brussels or Washington could reduce what its passport is worth. Argentina’s main risk is internal: a domestic court could limit the legal basis of the programme. Neither risk can be priced with confidence today.

For a family of four focused on cost, St Kitts is hard to beat. For a single applicant or couple focused on reach and a long-term plan B, Argentina deserves serious study.
