Skiing in Argentina: winter in July

Argentina's ski season runs while the northern hemisphere has summer. Five resorts stand out for families, from the lake town of Bariloche to the southernmost lifts in the world.

Updated 7 min readSourced from official announcements

Key facts

  • The season usually runs from late June to September; Cerro Castor often runs into early October.
  • Cerro Catedral, 19 km from Bariloche, has about 600 hectares of skiable terrain and 39 lifts.
  • Las Leñas rises from 2,240 to 3,430 metres and has a 7 km longest run.
  • Cerro Castor, near Ushuaia, is described as the world's southernmost ski resort.
  • Many resorts lie near the Chilean border, where property purchases by foreigners need prior approval.

For a family based in the northern hemisphere, Argentina offers a second winter. The Andes have snow from June to September, the resorts are uncrowded outside the Argentine school holidays in July, and the best of them sit beside lakes and forests rather than above tree line.

This guide compares the five resorts most relevant to international families, explains how to get there, and sets out what to check before you buy a ski home.

The five resorts at a glance

Resort Province Nearest town Character
Cerro Catedral Río Negro Bariloche, 19 km Largest terrain, full-service town, lake views
Chapelco Neuquén San Martín de los Andes, 12–19 km Forest runs, small-town base
Cerro Bayo Neuquén Villa La Angostura, 9 km Small, quiet, close to town
Las Leñas Mendoza Malargüe (airport about 95 km) High altitude, steep off-piste terrain
Cerro Castor Tierra del Fuego Ushuaia, about 26 km Southernmost resort, long season

Cerro Catedral and Bariloche

Cerro Catedral is the anchor of Argentine skiing. It lies 19 km from San Carlos de Bariloche and has about 600 hectares of skiable terrain, 39 lifts and some 48 km of runs. The upper slopes have wide views over the lake district, and the heaviest snow usually falls between June and August.

The advantage is the town. Bariloche has hospitals, private schools, restaurants and an airport with direct flights from Buenos Aires and, in winter, seasonal flights from São Paulo and Santiago. A family can ski in the morning and be back in town for lunch. Our guide to Patagonia living covers Bariloche’s neighbourhoods and services in detail.

The downside is crowds. Argentine schools usually take their winter break in July, and Catedral is busiest then. Late August and September are usually quieter.

Chapelco and Cerro Bayo: the Neuquén lakes

Chapelco sits above San Martín de los Andes, at the east end of Lake Lácar. Distances from town are given as 12 to 19 km depending on the road. It has about 140 hectares of skiable terrain, 29 marked trails and a gondola, chairlifts and surface lifts. San Martín has its own airport, Chapelco (CPC), about 22 km from town.

Cerro Bayo rises behind Villa La Angostura on the north shore of Lake Nahuel Huapi. Its base is about 9 km from town, the shortest transfer of any Argentine resort, and its summit is at 1,782 metres. Terrain figures vary by source; one guide gives about 200 hectares. It is small, scenic and well suited to families with younger children. Most visitors fly to Bariloche and drive around the lake.

Las Leñas: high and steep

Las Leñas, in the south of Mendoza province, opened in 1983. Its base is at 2,240 metres and its top at 3,430 metres, giving a vertical drop of about 1,200 metres. It has 14 lifts, a longest run of 7 km and steep off-piste terrain reached from the upper lifts. It hosted World Cup downhill races in the 1980s and the Winter Pan American Games in 1990.

The key lift for the steep terrain, Marte, often closes in high wind, so a week at Las Leñas needs flexibility. The resort is self-contained, built around its own hotels, and far from any town. The nearest airport, at Malargüe, is about 95 km away. Many visitors fly to Mendoza or San Rafael and drive, or arrive by charter. See our guide to private aviation in Argentina.

Las Leñas pairs well with a home in Mendoza’s wine country; see Mendoza wine country living.

Cerro Castor: the end of the world

Cerro Castor, about 26 km from Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego, is described as the southernmost ski resort in the world. It has one of the longest seasons in South America, and snowmaking on key runs helps extend it. Its projected 2026 season ran from 3 July to 4 October.

Ushuaia’s international airport is about 30 minutes’ drive away. Ushuaia is about 2,400 km from Buenos Aires in a straight line, so for most families Castor is a ski trip rather than a place for a second home.

Seasons, school holidays and costs

  • Opening. Resorts open when snow allows, usually from mid- or late June. In 2026, Las Leñas aimed to open on 20–21 June, and Chapelco in mid- to late June, both subject to snow.
  • Peak weeks. July, when Argentine schools usually have their winter break, is the busiest and most expensive time.
  • Late season. September often has good snow and far fewer people. Castor can run into October.

Lift prices are set in pesos and change each season. In June 2026, press reports put an adult day pass at Cerro Catedral from about ARS 115,000, and Cerro Castor offered multi-day packages from about ARS 800,000. Check each resort’s website for current prices; they rise with inflation.

Buying a ski home

Most families buy in the town, not at the base of the lifts. Bariloche, San Martín de los Andes and Villa La Angostura are year-round towns, and summer brings lakes, sailing, walking and fishing. A house that works in both seasons is easier to enjoy, and easier to rent out if you choose to.

Before you buy, check four points:

  1. Border security zones. The lake towns and resorts lie close to Chile. Foreigners need prior approval (previa conformidad) from the Ministry of the Interior to buy property inside a border security zone. The national geographic institute (IGN) publishes a map tool to check a plot.
  2. National parks. Much of the lake district lies inside or beside Nahuel Huapi and Lanín national parks, where building rules can be strict.
  3. Rural and lakefront land. Larger plots count as rural land. The 2011 limits on foreign ownership are not in force after a Supreme Court ruling of 29 September 2026, but Congress could still act.
  4. Winter access. Ask how the road is cleared, who clears the drive, and how heating is supplied.

We could not find a reliable 2025–2026 source for ski-home prices by resort. Ask several local agents. Our guide to buying property in Argentina as a foreigner explains the purchase process.

Skiing and citizenship

A ski home does not give residence or citizenship. Families who want an Argentine passport may consider the Argentina citizenship by investment programme announced on 2 October 2026, which has no real estate route. Its legal basis, DNU 366/2025, was ruled against by the Cámara Nacional Electoral in June 2026 and is under appeal to the Supreme Court; see our legal status update.

Frequently asked questions

When is the ski season in Argentina?

Most resorts open from late June to September, depending on snow. Cerro Castor near Ushuaia usually has the longest season; its projected 2026 season ran from 3 July to 4 October.

Which Argentine ski resort is best for families?

Cerro Catedral, near Bariloche, has the most terrain and the biggest town with services. Chapelco and Cerro Bayo are smaller and quieter. Las Leñas suits strong skiers who want high, steep terrain.

How do you get to Las Leñas?

Las Leñas is in the south of Mendoza province. The nearest airport is Malargüe, about 95 km away; many visitors fly to Mendoza or San Rafael and continue by road, or arrive by private or charter flight.

Can a foreigner buy a ski chalet in Argentina?

Yes, in principle. But most resorts are close to Chile, so property may lie inside a border security zone, where foreigners need prior approval from the Ministry of the Interior. Ask your notary to check each plot.
