Key facts
- Salta was founded on 16 April 1582 and had 627,704 residents in the 2022 census.
- The Quebrada de Humahuaca in Jujuy became a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 2 July 2003.
- Cafayate lies at about 1,683 metres, 189 km south of Salta city.
- Salta province has about 3,600 hectares of vineyards; Colomé's highest vineyard is cited at 3,111 metres.
- Salta borders three countries, so border security zone rules apply in parts of the province.
The north-west feels like a different country from Buenos Aires. Adobe churches, terraced fields and Andean markets sit under huge skies, and the culture looks north to the old routes of Peru as much as south to the River Plate. For a family, it offers a dry climate, a strong sense of place and some of Argentina’s most distinctive wine.
This guide covers Salta city, the Quebrada de Humahuaca in Jujuy, the Calchaquí valleys and Cafayate, and the points to check before buying land.
Salta city: “Salta la Linda”
Hernando de Lerma founded Salta on 16 April 1582 as a staging post on the route between Lima and the River Plate. The city sits at about 1,150–1,200 metres in the Lerma valley. The 2022 census counted 627,704 residents, which makes it Argentina’s seventh-largest city.
The centre is built around Plaza 9 de Julio:
- The Cathedral, largely rebuilt in the 19th century after an earthquake, with an altar to General Martín Miguel de Güemes, the local independence hero.
- The Cabildo, the old town hall, which now houses a regional history museum.
- The Basilica of San Francisco, one of the city’s best-known landmarks.
A short walk from the square, the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology (MAAM) holds the remains of three Inca children found on the Llullaillaco volcano, displayed one at a time for conservation. A cable car climbs Cerro San Bernardo for views over the city.
Salta has a subtropical highland climate. Summers are warm with frequent storms, and more than 80% of the rain falls between December and March. Winters are dry and sunny, with common frost at night. Many families find the dry season, from April to November, the most pleasant time to be here.
Jujuy and the Quebrada de Humahuaca
North of Salta, Jujuy province holds the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a narrow valley about 155 km long. UNESCO listed it as a cultural landscape on 2 July 2003. People have lived here for at least 10,000 years, and some farming terraces still in use are more than 1,500 years old. The valley was an Inca caravan route and later linked the River Plate with Peru.
The best-known stops are Purmamarca, beneath the Hill of Seven Colours; Tilcara, with its pre-Hispanic fortified site (pucará); and Humahuaca itself, a small town of about 11,000 people. To the west, the Salinas Grandes salt flats lie on the high plateau.
The Tren a las Nubes (“Train to the Clouds”) crosses the Puna from San Antonio de los Cobres to the La Polvorilla viaduct at about 4,200 metres. It runs on a seasonal timetable, so check before you plan a trip. Altitude is a real consideration on the plateau: take advice if anyone in the family has heart or lung conditions.
Cafayate and the Calchaquí valleys
South of Salta, the Calchaquí valleys run through Salta, Tucumán and Catamarca. The drive from Salta to Cafayate follows National Route 68 for about 183 km through the red rock formations of the Quebrada de las Conchas. Cafayate itself sits at about 1,683 metres, with under 250 mm of rain a year.
The valleys are known for high-altitude wine:
- Wines of Argentina figures put Salta’s vineyard area at about 3,600 hectares, with Malbec the leading red and Torrontés the leading white.
- Cafayate holds most of the province’s vines, mostly at about 1,650 to 2,000 metres.
- Bodega Colomé, founded in 1831 and bought by Donald Hess in 2001, cites its highest vineyard at 3,111 metres, which it describes as the highest in the world.
Torrontés is the north’s signature grape. It makes aromatic, dry white wines, and the cooling winds and strong day–night temperature swings help keep acidity in the grapes. North of Cafayate, the dirt section of National Route 40 leads about 165 km to Cachi, a village beneath the Nevado de Cachi. Avoid that road in the summer rainy season.

Estancias in the north
Rural property in the north ranges from farms in the lower, greener valleys to vineyard estates in the Calchaquí valleys and remote highland land. If you can, spend time on a working estate as a guest before you commit to one.
Before you buy rural land here, check:
- Water. Rain is seasonal and scarce in the high valleys. Irrigation rights and wells determine what the land can support.
- Native forest. In the lower, greener areas, provincial forest maps under Ley 26.331 may limit clearing. Ask for the plot’s forest category.
- Access. Many roads are unpaved, and summer rain can cut them for days.
- Border zones. Salta borders Chile, Bolivia and Paraguay; Jujuy borders Chile and Bolivia. Foreigners need prior approval (previa conformidad) from the Ministry of the Interior to buy property inside a border security zone.
The national caps on foreign ownership of rural land, from Ley 26.737, are not in force after the Supreme Court ruling of 29 September 2026. The opposition has asked for a session of the Chamber of Deputies on 15 October 2026 to reject the decree that repealed them, so the position could change. Our guide to buying an estancia in Argentina explains the rules in detail.
We could not find a reliable 2025–2026 source for land prices in Salta or Jujuy. Ask several local agents and an independent agronomist.
Getting there
Salta’s Martín Miguel de Güemes International Airport is the main gateway, served by Aerolíneas Argentinas and low-cost carriers from Buenos Aires and other cities. A first stage of a new terminal opened in late August 2026. International routes are few and regional: in June 2026 the government authorised Paranair to fly Asunción–Salta–Iquique, and seasonal services to Brazil have operated in summer. Most international visitors connect through Buenos Aires. Jujuy has its own airport for the Quebrada.
For families who fly privately, Salta is one of the airports where general aviation has grown steadily, linked to mining, oil and agriculture. See our guide to private aviation in Argentina.
The north and citizenship
A house or estancia in the north does not give residence or citizenship. The Argentina citizenship by investment programme, announced on 2 October 2026, is a separate route with no real estate option. Its legal basis, DNU 366/2025, was ruled against by the Cámara Nacional Electoral in June 2026 and is under appeal to the Supreme Court; see our legal status update. For other regions, compare Mendoza wine country and Córdoba and the Sierras.
